1. Who ordered the construction of the Opera?

The construction of the Opera was ordered by Napoleon III.

2. What are its various architectural styles?

Its various architectural styles are Renaissance, Baroque and Classical styles.

3. What was the purpose of the large ramp on the West side of the Opera?

The large ramp on the West side of the building was put there so that the Emperor could drive directly into the main hall of the Opera.

4. Why was the completion of the Opera delayed?

The completion of the Opera was delayed because of a war in 1870 and a fire in 1873. Finally, the Opera opened in 1875.

5. Who designed the Opera?

The Opera was designed by the architect Charles Garnier and that is why the Opera Palace is often called the Garnier Palace.

6. What was the purpose of the underground lake?

The purpose of the underground lake was to make the foundations of the building safe.

7. What are the four allegorical groups on the facade?

The facade contains four allegorical groups: Music, Lyric Poetry, Lyric Drama and Dance.
